My Writing Process

My Writing Process

Julia, THANKS again for a very timely message.

My writing process includes ALWAYS carrying paper and 2 pens with me. The second pen is in case one gives out. I jot down many notes day and night. Those notes go on an online mind mapping service called Comapping www.comapping.com I have many huge complex mind maps there from inspirations, researching, and brainstorming from over the years.

There comes times when it is right and ripe to move forward to put those in to messages that might become blog posts or articles.

I find that I work best when I just go with the flow for extended times. Then I go back to edit in minor ways. It is amusing to me that my subconscious is ALWAYS editing such works. There are moments when I am taking my daily walks or just as I fall asleep or as I wake up that an essential change of a word comes to me strongly. I make a note and the edit.

I understand what you mean about staying with the feminine too long. That is a nice, safe, and comfy place to collect and organize yet more tidbits. It is private. There is no other person to like or dislike it. The connections in my mind increase and get more dense.

BUT my purpose for writing is to serve others. SO someday I MUST move from the shaded drawing table into the light of day.

My fears of rejection and failure must be overcome with bold action steps.

Over the years I have invested untold numbers of hours into projects that I was SURE would be a big hit. YET the response was nearly zero. So I retreated back into my shell to make the next expression much better. Thus fueling my perfectionism and procrastination.

My brother sent me an audio book named Expert Secrets by Russell Brunson. That writer has an amazing proven track record of marketing several online businesses and teaching others his system called Clickfunnels https://www.clickfunnels.com/ . He shares ways to adapt proven concepts to attract those who will value what is offered and not open to crickets.

His marketing system will bring lots of new prospects to consider what is offered. Then it is up to me to deliver the goods. At 64 years old I have had many and various experiences. I have insights and wisdom that I wish some person had passed along to me decades ago. I do not lack for the possible quantity of what I have to offer. My challenge is to summarize and simplify the lessons.

There is an online tool that I encountered years ago and I used briefly. That tool is just right for me today. Webspiration www.webspiration.com offers the option to BOTH mind map AND outline. By just clicking a button these shift back and forth. SO the natural ways I think that are mind map orients will INSTANTLY become outlines. From those outlines I will make improvements. Plus there are ways to link to web pages and images. That outline becomes the skeleton of text documents and the highlights of those become slideshows. LONG ago I made screencast videos while using voice over of a slide show. Also I had diagrams to illustrate my lessons. Webspiration www.webspiration.com unlike most other mind map services allow diagrams where ALL the units are not linked together.

Therefore, THANKS to your blog post I will go ahead to START using  Webspiration www.webspiration.com TODAY.

Plus your blog post reminds me of a time 4 months ago when it was ripe for me to use a service named VoiceThread www.voicethread.com This will help me to gradually build a beta launch team. I balked several times to start that and things got messy. SO I intend to start using that service THIS week.

Finally, there is a free app that has helped me overcome some of my perfectionism. Previously I would labor over a document for hours. BUT before I shared a major document I asked a friend to edit it. He did a great job. But often he was busy. Mostly his edits were minor corrections about the uses of commas or verb tenses. Then I came on Grammarly https://app.grammarly.com/ It alerts me to grammar issues as I write. So I do not need to wait for my friend to find extra time for me.

Progress Not Perfection

Progress Not Perfection

Writing this has been therapeutic for me and I hope it helps you.

I did not make specific prayer requests here but many are implied.

INTRODUCTION
There are many sayings in the 12 step community that have helped me over the years.
The saying that has helped me recently is this, progress and not perfection.

I feel disappointed inside that there is so much I want to do yet it seems that I am moving like a snail.
However, as I wrote this I have been able to notice that there has been significant progress.
While I am not moving forward at the speed of light, there is evidence of gradual headway.

It is like I am a pioneer that is on an adventure while walking in the wilderness.
What has been visible for a very long time has been the dense vegetation on the path.
But then there are intervals when the path gets to a clearing on a very tall hill.
That is when hindsight reveals how much distance has been covered.
There is both more challenges to come as well as there is evidence of meaningful progress.

This message began as a brief email to an individual.
It was my response to an email of a very transparent person that shared.
Their sharing included a summary of their current struggles and what is working for them.
The topic of their email was borrowed here, progress not perfection.
They asked readers to share their compulsions and addictions as well as what was helping.
So let me ask you the same, what are your struggles and what is working for you?

My response blossomed into what you have here.
As it blossomed I noticed and recorded what has been happening in my life.

I am coming to realize that each part of my life is connected to each other part.
I might think and plan in categories but the reality of life does not sit in separate stalls.
My health, fitness, spiritual life, social life, learning, creativity, and more areas interact daily.

I have had an inclination to depression.
Generally, I have super high expectations of myself.
I know that ideally, I could accomplish a great many things.
But just because I can imagine it and plan it that does not make it an instant reality.

But what trips me up is that realistically I am not a robot.
I cannot write at 200 words a minute.
I cannot concentrate for 12 hours at a time.
I cannot read all the books by my chair, on my selves, and on my Amazon Wish Lists.

There is just one of me even though the plans in my files could employ 40 people full time.

I have been struggling with these kinds of matters for decades.
Along the way, I learned many lessons.
I experimented with many online tools and have kept using just a few of them.

During the coming months, I will make short videos to review and recommend these tools.
You are invited to consider these for your own use.

I request your best prayers.

What has been helping me is the following.

WORKAHOLISM
I have been participating in a daily accountability conference call at 10 AM my time.
This is a gathering of men of Workaholics Anon http://www.workaholics-anonymous.org/
We start with Action Plan both for self-soul care as well as Keep It Simple work plan with a margin.
Then a topic is suggested by one of the 4 to 7 men.
We are done in 30 minutes.
Most of these men are in commission sales or own businesses.

These men pointed me to this workbook for WA that has been very helpful.
It has short lessons with lots of questions and space for each of the 12 steps.
As a writer, this has been helpful to write my way to in-depth insights into my patterns.

On Thursdays, we go an extra 30 minutes.
We check in at 10:00 to 10:15.
Then we hang up and work on the workbook until 10:45.
Then we call again and share what we just learned.
This is a great system.

Here is the list of other Workaholics Anon meetings on phone, Skype, and face-to-face.

TOOLS
I told the men that I have been pruning my task management online service.
I use Kanbanflow https://kanbanflow.com to organize my TODO lists.
I had been using that for years but it had been cluttered with old tasks that were years old.
After pruning it is now up to date and far more useful to keep me focused.

There is a saying that in order to change your life you must change your habits.
Changing habits is simple to plan but not easy make into a repeated routine.

I have rarely gone to fitness clubs over the years.
There I toyed around with various fitness equipment.
But I did notice a few people that were diligent about their fitness.
Some would carry a sheet or clipboard with a note of how many reps on each machine.
I have had complementary sessions with fitness coaches that introduced me to that method.
It never stuck with me but I understand the importance of persistence and feedback loops.

Fitness is not my chief priority at this season.
But there are other areas that need greater self-discipline.
I have also pruned Joe's Goals http://www.joesgoals.com/
This helps me track my plans and actions about healthy habits.
I can see in a glance how I am doing about Prayer, Meditation, Journaling, Exercise, Learning, etc.

DESIRE MAP
I have completed 7 of the 8 modules of The Desire Map by Danielle LaPorte.

The Desire Map is a book, workbook here
and online videos here

I intend to complete video module 8 today.
This has been super helpful for me to know my 3 Core Desired Feelings.
Those 3 terms have already helped me to simplify, focus and navigate my too many projects.

C60 or Carbon 60
I have been taking the best nutritional supplements I could afford for decades.
I have had some improvements but they were difficult to measure.
Mostly when I use the powders in my morning smoothie and take tablets I do not crave junk foods.
Generally, my energy level is steady so I do not lean on sugar to get a jolt of energy.

A huge help has been taking Carbon 60 C-60 https://c-60.com/
There is lots of material online about Carbon 60.

Taking a little 2 or 3 times a day has greatly enhanced my awareness and mental clarity.
My emotions are much calmer.
I have plenty of insights into the ordinary elements of my daily life.
I feel less stressed by the tiny bumps along the road of life.

Thankfully, my inclination to sexual fantasies has greatly reduced.
I do not need that spiritual darkness pestering me.

I have become far more sensitive to violence in movies and TV shows.
So I avoid those more and orient more to biographies, documentaries and historical dramas.

All is not rainbows and butterflies.
My increased sensitivity makes me more aware of the suffering and injustice in the world.
I feel more overwhelmed by my own weaknesses and shortcomings.
I feel more disappointed in those in authority that did not root out the corruption long ago.

GETTING THINGS DONE & KANBANFLOW & COMAPPING
Years ago I encountered David Allen of Getting Things Done https://gettingthingsdone.com/
He teaches to get the ideas out of your head and into a system that you use.
That provides peace of mind for more creativity, problem-solving, and fresh ideas.

I use Kanbanflow https://kanbanflow.com  for collecting my ideas.

I also use Comapping https://www.comapping.com/  that is an online mind mapping service.

I have dozens of projects there on many mind maps.
Some of those projects are in good order but mostly those are a cluttered mess.
For the next two weeks, I will focus on pruning those projects.
I will bring them up to date, prioritize them, and distill the core concepts into useful guidelines.

My intention in pruning these online maps is to come away with basic blueprints.
These blueprints will change as I get into motion and begin to publish various units online.
But before I start I need an overview of how the parts might flow together as systems.

A very successful online leader said that we tend to overestimate what we can do in one year.
Yet we tend to underestimate what we can do in 3 years.
He guides others and his staff to use the 3 year time horizon.
His organization has grown amazingly in a short time.
So the blueprints will be oriented to a 3-year time horizon.

CALLING
All of these ideas are like little arrows that point toward the same grand objective.
My guidance from God for decades has been around the same things.
I have come to believe that my purpose, calling, and destiny is sketched out before me.
I am uniquely prepared to pioneer innovative online lifelong learning for adults.

This will include a synergistic blend of podcasts, masterclasses, ecourses, online communities, etc.

What is in my heart and mind is far beyond what I can do alone.
So I must include in the blueprint ways to enroll and involve others.
I will need advisers, editors, beta testers, and more.

PODCASTS
I have studied how to make podcasts several times over the years.
I understand most of the basics.
I have the essential equipment.

In those mind maps are many outlines that could become podcast episodes.

I have more than enough knowledge, skills, and motivation.

I have been reminded of 2 key guidelines from my studies.
Both of these direct me to record 7 to 12 episodes at a time.

Most people who begin to produce podcasts quit at about episode 3.
So it is recommended to record at least 7 before going public.
Those can be released gradually or all at once.

Also as a podcaster, it is not known ahead of time what people will like.
So offering several sets of podcasts as seasons or albums it is a way to test the market.

I have more than enough outlines for a dozen such albums.

Today I am not declaring when the first ones will go public.
I am saying that is the direction I am headed.

I hope that this will finally get me out of my excessive researching and planning modes.
It will surely challenge me to apply progress not perfection along the way.

As always I request your best prayers.
And I thank you again for each of your prayers.

CONCLUSION
My life is imperfect, but by the grace of God, I am making progress.
Little by little, there are improvements.
My job is to consistently pray, meditate, journal, talk with individuals and meet with groups.
That leads to graceful spiritual growth, peace of mind, and improvements in my personal world.

Let me repeat a previous paragraph and make this into an invitation.

Shalom
John

Detoxing, Journaling, and Dancing

DETOXING
This is day 7 of a 7-day detox. There is just 1 more set of tablets. I will be glad when this is done. I have been feeling weak and weary. I have visited the bathroom far more often than normal. Surely lots of bad stuff left my body.

About twice a year has lots of gas or I feel like an overstuffed doll. So I detox to reset my body.

Long ago I learned about the importance of taking care of my colon. I have used different methods before and I do not plan to use this method again.

JOURNALING
It seems that God wants me to make journaling a top priority at this season. Both of the online courses are pointing me in that direction with great questions and exercises.

Plus I had been going to the Workaholics Anonymous website where I found their online literature http://www.workaholics-anonymous.org/literature that sparked journaling.

God led me to this workbook by Workaholics Anonymous http://www.workaholics-anonymous.org/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=51 that I recently ordered. The person that recommended it has been getting great results.

DANCING
The good news is that I have been walking around the property most days in the early morning and in the late evening.

The bad news is that is all the exercise I usually get.

Long ago I did some yoga and some Tai Chi. But I did not stick with either of those.

In recent years I did some Qi Gong. It is like Tai Chi. It involves gentle movements. But I did not stick with that.

Mostly boredom blocked me from making those a healthy habit.

Then by the grace of God, I was introduced to 5 Rhythms  https://www.5rhythms.com/  by Gabrielle Roth. It is a semi-structured way to move the body using dance movements in a sequence. That sequence is flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness.

I have watched many Youtube videos by Gabrielle Roth and those she has trained. It appeals to me deeply. But so far I have failed to do it at home alone.

As you may know, I like to move my body when I worship God during congregational singing. The Bible says to Praise the name of the Lord with dance in Psalm 143:3 and Psalm 150:4.

What you might not know is that during my junior and senior years of high school I was a dance instructor at a country club. The woman that taught the dance moves needed a few males and females that knew the steps to demonstrate and help the new students. I enjoyed those experiences.

PRAYER
Please pray for the ongoing health of my body. And may God guide me in suitable ways to detox each time in the future.

Pray for me to optimize my time when journaling. I know that going deep and wide when writing in my journals it is super therapeutic. I have a spiral notebook for each online course. But I find myself too busy to write in those as much as I would like. This season of intense journaling will pass. So I want to get the most out of it.

Pray for me to start to take baby steps to learn and consistently dance the 5 rhythms. Intuitively I believe it will be good for me to move my body in those manners of creative expression. And some of the videos say that it is like a meditation that calms the mind.

Shalom
John

Lease, Annual Physical and Start

Lease, Annual Physical and Start

LEASE
During the last update I mentioned that the owner of this apartment had raised my rent. I went to Dallas with my apartment manager, Darlene, to the housing authority office. The rent increase was approved and I was approved for another year for Section 8 Housing subsidy.

But then many weeks later my lease was coming up for renewal. Neither of us had received official paperwork. Both of us contacted the housing authority several times. Then I requested prayers. Shortly after that my case worker finally sent the official paperwork.

I had expected that my part of the rent would increase by 10 to 50 dollars. Yet it was decreased by 3 dollars. That was a blessing!

ANNUAL PHYSICAL
I turned 65 in April of this year. I registered for Medicare. Then 134 dollars was taken out of my monthly retirement income. My insurance agent connected me with a major insurance company and recommended that I apply for Medicaid. I was approved for both. One of the perks is an annual physical exam at no cost to me.

Thankfully I have been very healthy all my life. But at my age it seems prudent to run a battery of tests on my physical body each year. That will establish baselines and notice changes over time.

I contacted the office of a doctor that is about 1 mile from my home in early April. But here I am in early July and I have not yet seen the doctor. I did walk there and see a nurse who ran a few tests a month ago. I had contacted the office a few times to be told they will call me when they can fit me in. After  12 weeks my patience had reached my limit yesterday. I called a different doctors office and was offered the option of an appointment for a physical in 6 or 7 days.

I have written and posted a poor review of that doctors office several places online with a one star rating.

I was on the phone with the insurance company for 2 hours as they took detailed notes of what did and did not happen during the last 12 weeks.

Please pray for the blessings of God on my relationship with my new Primary Care Provider, Dr. Perrin. Her office is in Ferris Texas that is 18 miles north of my residence.

START
Most days I walk around the apartment complex in the morning and in the evening. During those times I pray and I enjoy nature. I often get inspirations that I write down on the paper I carry with me always. I also get inspirations at church, at home, and while shopping. Those notes go online in the various lists and mind maps. From that comes the tasks that I do and the content of my various writings. Over the decades I have learned to be consistent to capture and organize such ideas. I have prayed for wisdom in how to use these. I have learned to prioritize there.

The good news is that God has given me a creative imagination. One of my strengths is to design synergistic systems that solve complex Christian education problems. My many notes are centered around harnessing online communication technologies to teach, train, equip, support, and encourage Christians so that they will become reproducing disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

This is a huge and complex vision with a game plan that will reach missionaries and indigenous workers overseas. Besides the rough sketch of the strategic plan I have been blessed as God has led me to take many online courses that have taught me the techie skills.

My current challenge is to be led of the Lord Jesus in how to get started. There are many moving parts that must be working to launch the MOOC to the public on the first of September. I request for you to ask God to grant me His wisdom from above. May God guide me in how to start this month so that there will be some momentum for August.

I admit that my fears of rejection and failure have kept me stuck in excessive planning in the past. I can feel those present these days. May God grant me courage to take bold action steps to break the ice soon.

After it has started then I will make changes as needed.

Shalom
John
